A summer in Iowa
Mia is twelve and she lives in Chicago, a huge city in the Midwest. Every summer she visits her cousin Jake on his family's farm in Iowa. Jake's hometown is very small. There's no mall and no movie theater, but there are fields, hills and lots of cattle.
"I'm going to show you something amazing tomorrow," Jake says on the first evening. "You like birds, don't you?" Mia isn't sure. "Birds are OK, I guess," she says.
The next morning it's sunny and warm. Jake and Mia ride their bikes along the river and up a hill. Jake points at a big tree. "Look! There's an eagle's nest!" Mia can't believe it. Two young eagles are sitting in the nest, and their mother is flying over the river.
In the evening there are dark clouds in the sky. "It's going to rain," says Jake's dad. "We're going to stay indoors tonight. How about a game?" Mia smiles. Life in the country isn't boring at all. Actually, she thinks it's wonderful.
